Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales is a collection of the little verses and stories that English children had learned by ear for generations. It was put together by James Orchard Halliwell, who later added Phillipps to his name, and it appeared in 1849. He was a scholar of old English literature, and he built the book as a follow up to an earlier collection of nursery rhymes.

He did not want these verses to vanish. They had passed from nurse to child and from child to child, and few people wrote them down. The book gives you the rhymes sorted by use, with notes on where they came from and how they changed. Let us begin with the first key point, which is that these rhymes are far older than the nursery.

Punkt 1 von 4

These rhymes are older than childhood books

Halliwell starts from a simple idea. Many verses that children chant are not made for children at all. They are scraps of older songs, charms, ballads and street cries that drifted into the nursery and stayed there.

He treats them as a kind of living antiquity. A rhyme can keep an old word, an old custom or an old joke long after the world around it has changed. A child who skips to a counting verse may be repeating something that adults once sang or spoke for quite different reasons.

This is why the book carries notes as well as verses. Halliwell compares versions from different counties and points to similar rhymes in other places and older writings. For the listener, the lesson is that a rhyme is a thing with a history. It has travelled, and it has been reshaped by many mouths on the way.

That’s 1 of 4 key points.
