About this book
What can a tiny mouse teach a lion, or a slow tortoise teach a runner certain he will win?
The Aesop for Children gathers short fables attributed to Aesop, each ending with a plain line of advice. In The Lion and the Mouse, a small creature disturbs a powerful sleeper. In The Hare and the Tortoise, a proud runner treats his steady rival as a joke.
Other tales bring temptation close. The Fox and the Crow begins with a crow holding cheese, while The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs introduces a farmer with plenty who still wants more. In The Boy Who Cried Wolf, a bored shepherd finds a dangerous amusement. Patience, greed, kindness, honesty and pride take shape in simple, memorable scenes.

In short
Would you give up your dinner because someone said your voice was lovely? A Crow does in one of these tales, losing her cheese when a Fox flatters her into opening her beak.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Flattery is the bait that traps the careless
Many fables begin with a smooth voice and end with a trap. In The Fox and the Crow, a Crow sits on a branch with a piece of cheese, and a hungry Fox stands below. He praises her feathers, her shape and her wings, then says a bird so perfect must have a lovely voice.
The Crow is suspicious at first. She keeps her beak shut. But she wants very much to be called Queen of Birds, and wanting it wears down her caution. She opens her beak to caw, the cheese falls, and the Fox walks off, remarking that her voice is loud but her wits are missing.

What is The Aesop for Children about?
It is a collection of more than one hundred short animal fables, each ending with a brief moral. The tales cover flattery, pride, greed, hard work, kindness, unity and the unfairness of the powerful, using foxes, wolves, lions, mice and many more.
What is the moral of The Fox and the Crow?
The Fox flatters the Crow until she opens her beak to sing and drops her cheese. The moral is that flatterers live at the expense of those who listen to them, so be careful of praise that comes with a hidden aim.
Who was Aesop and did he write these fables?
Aesop is the name tradition gives to a Greek storyteller of long ago, said to have been a slave. The fables were told aloud and passed down, then gathered by later writers, so the collection grew over time under his name.
