Die jungen Eisenbahner: Abenteuer- und Erfindungsgeschichten in short
The Young Railroaders follows two telegraph operators, Alex Ward and Jack Orr, as they grow from schoolboys into trusted railroad men. Each chapter gives them a danger, such as a wrecked switch, a fire, or a bank robbery, and each time they meet it with practical knowledge and nerve. A third friend, Wilson Jennings, hides a steady spirit behind neat clothes.
What Die jungen Eisenbahner: Abenteuer- und Erfindungsgeschichten is about
What would you do if angry trackmen planned to send a passenger train into a river, and you were a fourteen-year-old boy hiding in the loft of an old log cabin? Alex Ward does not freeze. He listens, slips out through a rusty door, and finds a way to reach his father's station across a dark valley with a lantern and his cap.
Francis Lovell Coombs wrote The Young Railroaders as a run of linked adventures on the American railroad frontier in the days of the telegraph. Alex and his friend Jack Orr learn Morse code, take jobs at lonely stations, and meet one emergency after another. Each time the answer comes from what they know about wires, batteries, switches, and trains.
Für wen es gedacht ist. This book suits readers who love fast adventure, clever problem solving, and the workings of old machines. If you enjoy telegraph keys and steam trains, you will keep listening.

A boy signals a station with a lantern
At Bixton, Alex Ward, the station agent's son, shelters from a storm in an old log cabin and hides in the loft as trackmen bring in their bound foreman, Hennessy. Big Tony, a dismissed worker, stirs the men up with lies about cut wages. His plan is to throw a switch so the night train, Number Twenty, runs onto a washed-out spur and drops into the river.
Alex first has to get out alive. He forces a rusty door, crawls through a barn, and cuts Hennessy's cords. The gang gives chase, and Alex heads for the old brickyard. From the brickyard semaphore he can see the station lights through the trees.
He ties an old switch lantern to the arm, covers and uncovers the light with his cap, and flashes the station's telegraph call in Morse. When Big Tony snatches the lamp, Alex does not give up the message. Hennessy tackles Tony, the trackmen see the truth, and Number Twenty is stopped in time.
The point is that the skill you already own can reach farther than you think.
