Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Seven Secrets is a detective novel by William Le Queux, who wrote many popular thrillers before his death in 1927. It is set in Victorian London and told in the first person by Doctor Ralph Boyd, a young physician at Guy's Hospital. He is in love, he is rising in his profession, and he cannot shake a feeling that something terrible is coming.

When that feeling comes true, Boyd is drawn into a murder that baffles Scotland Yard. His closest friend is Ambler Jevons, a tea blender who solves crimes for the love of it. The book gives you a wounded heart that no weapon seems able to explain, a sweetheart whose past is hidden, and a dead man who will not stay quiet. Along the way it offers a tour of Edwardian London, from Harley Street consulting rooms to Thames-side inquests and the slums of the East End. The tale is told by a man who admits he is watching the woman he loves for signs of guilt. Let us begin with a doctor who cannot explain his own dread.

A doctor cannot shake his dread

The story opens in the rooms of Doctor Ralph Boyd, assistant physician at Guy's Hospital. He confides in his friend Ambler Jevons that he lives in constant fear of some coming disaster. He cannot say what it is or whom to suspect. Jevons laughs and tells him to forget it, but he soon grows serious.

Boyd is thirty-three and has done well at Edinburgh. He works as deputy for Sir Bernard Eyton, a famous specialist in nervous disorders who sees patients in Harley Street and lives by the sea at Hove. Sir Bernard is a miser who eats ham sandwiches in secret and loves amateur theatricals. Boyd lives a short walk away in Harley Place and takes the night calls his chief wants to avoid.

Jevons is the opposite sort of man. By day he blends tea in Mark Lane with an older partner. By night he is a gifted amateur detective whose name is respected at Scotland Yard. He studies clues the way other men collect pictures, and he is happiest when a mystery has no answer yet.

Boyd also mentions Ethelwynn, the woman he loves. Jevons begins to tease him about her, and Boyd cuts the talk short. The reader senses at once that she matters more than he admits.

What a reader keeps from this opening is a mood. A rational man feels a danger he cannot name, and his friend is the one person who might help him find it.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
