The Red Badge of Courage: An Episode of the American Civil War in short

The Red Badge of Courage follows one young private through two days of fighting. Henry Fleming begins as a boy full of romantic notions of war. In camp he doubts himself, and in battle he finds that fear and bravery do not come in neat packages.

What The Red Badge of Courage: An Episode of the American Civil War is about

What happens to a boy who dreams of glory when the guns finally begin to sound? Henry Fleming, a farm youth, has joined the Union army, and for months nothing happens. Then a rumor runs through camp that the regiment will move at last. For the first time he asks himself a plain and frightening question. Will he stand, or will he run?

The Red Badge of Courage was written by Stephen Crane, who had never seen a battle when he wrote it. He stays close to one young mind through two days of fighting. You meet a boy who is afraid of his own fear, and you see how a person can lie to himself with perfect sincerity.

Für wen es gedacht ist. This is for readers who love close portraits of a mind under pressure, who like war told from the ranks, and who enjoy vivid images, dry humor and honest questions about fear and pride.

The story in 8 parts

Rumors in camp make a young soldier doubt himself

The story opens in a winter camp on a riverbank, where an army waits out the mud. Across the water, enemy campfires glow like red eyes. A tall soldier, Jim Conklin, comes back from washing a shirt with big news. The army will move tomorrow, he says.

The camp splits at once into arguing groups. A loud private named Wilson calls the story a lie, and the two nearly come to blows.

The young private who listens is Henry Fleming. He crawls into his hut and thinks. All his life he has dreamed of battle, picturing Greek heroes, crowns and castles. His mother told him to do nothing he would be ashamed to tell her. Months of drill have worn the glamour off. Now one thought will not leave. He has never been tested, and he does not know what he will do when bullets fly.

He asks Jim whether the regiment will fight well. Jim answers honestly that he might run if everyone else did. The next morning the rumor proves false, but the youth's question stays. He decides that only fire will settle it.

A doubt about yourself cannot be settled by thinking, only by being tested.
