What Die interessante Lebensgeschichte des Olaudah Equiano is about
What happens to a boy who is carried off from his home at eleven, sold again and again, and shipped across an ocean, yet learns to read, trade, and navigate until he can pay for his own freedom? That is the life told in The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. He tells it himself, in plain and urgent prose.
Equiano says he was born in 1745 in a valley called Essaka, in the kingdom of Benin. He published the book in London in 1789, after many years at sea, hoping it would advance the cause of humanity. First, let us visit the village he never forgets.
Für wen es gedacht ist. Readers who love true stories of survival, sea voyages, and the history of the Atlantic world will find a vivid witness here. So will anyone drawn to memoir and to people who claim their own freedom.

A childhood in Essaka shapes his life
Equiano opens by describing the country he comes from. His father is an elder called an Embrenche, marked by a thick welt across the forehead. The elders settle disputes and punish crimes. He presents a plain, orderly society that he remembers clearly.
He describes feasts, dances, and music with obvious love. Because all take part in farming, he says, there are no beggars. War and slavery are part of that world too, but enslaved people among his own people work beside their masters and eat much the same food. He insists this is nothing like the plantation system he later meets.
His people believe in one Creator and in the spirits of dead relatives who guard the living. As a small boy he goes with his mother to her mother's tomb, where she weeps through the night. He argues that Africans are not inferior by nature, and that slavery crushes the mind. Every person comes from a home and a past.

Fragen zu Die interessante Lebensgeschichte des Olaudah Equiano
What is The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano about?
It is Equiano's memoir of being kidnapped from West Africa as a child, enduring the slave ship and plantation life, earning his freedom, and travelling widely as a sailor and free man while speaking out against the slave trade.
Is the narrative a true story and when was it published?
It is presented as a true autobiography. Equiano published it in London in 1789, writing in his own voice about events from his childhood until the late 1780s, and he supports parts of it with letters and documents.
Why does Equiano have two names, Olaudah Equiano and Gustavus Vassa?
Olaudah is his African name, which he says means fortunate or favoured. Captain Pascal renamed him Gustavus Vassa on a ship to England. He refuses at first, then accepts it, and he uses both names.
What is the main message of Equiano's narrative?
He shows that Africans are fully human, that slavery corrupts both enslaved and enslaver, and that the slave trade should end. He also shows how faith, education, and hard work helped him claim freedom.
Is the Interesting Narrative easy to read?
Yes, it moves through short, vivid episodes such as a kidnapping, a shipwreck, an Arctic voyage, and a purchase of freedom. Equiano writes in clear first person and explains each place and custom as he meets it.
