Die Essays Arthur Schopenhauers: Die Kunst, Recht zu behalten in short
Taken whole, the book is a study of why people disagree and how they behave when they do. It separates logic, the laws of thought, from dialectic, the art of fencing with words, and gives a simple framework of attacks. The thirty-eight stratagems follow in groups: stretching and twisting words, hiding the conclusion in questions, working on anger and names, and leaning on authority, crowds and insult.
What Die Essays Arthur Schopenhauers: Die Kunst, Recht zu behalten is about
Picture two people arguing at a dinner table. One of them is plainly wrong, yet he wins. He speaks louder, changes the subject at the right moment, and makes the other person look foolish in front of the guests. Arthur Schopenhauer, the German philosopher who died in 1860, believed this happens in nearly every dispute.
The Art of Controversy is the centre of this collection. It sets out how any claim can be attacked, then walks through thirty-eight stratagems. Shorter pieces on art, human nature, wisdom and genius fill out the volume. You will learn why vanity drives most debate, and why knowing the tricks lets you defend yourself.
Für wen es gedacht ist. This book suits readers who like sharp, witty observation of human behaviour, anyone who debates at work or online, students of philosophy and rhetoric, and lovers of aphorisms.

People argue to win, not to find truth
Schopenhauer begins from a plain claim. When two people disagree about anything that is not a simple fact, neither starts by checking his own reasoning. Each assumes the other is mistaken. He calls the study of this stubbornness eristic dialectic.
Why do we behave this way? Human nature is base. If people were honest, they would care only for the truth. In real life, vanity gets in the way, especially vanity about our intelligence. Many people speak before they think. When they later see that they are wrong, they still want to seem right.
There is a small excuse too. Sometimes our view is correct, but our proof was poor, and the reply seems to sink it. If we give up at once, we may lose a true position for a bad reason. A footnote from Machiavelli adds that if I concede, the other man may not do the same, so I am pushed into playing unfairly too.
For you, the lesson is practical. When you meet resistance, expect the other person to defend what they said, and notice the same pull in yourself.
People defend what they have already said, so expect it from others and watch for it in yourself.

What is The Art of Controversy about?
It is a guide to winning arguments, set out as a list of thirty-eight stratagems that people use in debate. Schopenhauer describes each trick, gives examples, and often suggests how to answer it.
What does eristic dialectic mean?
Eristic dialectic is Schopenhauer's name for the art of arguing so as to win, whether or not you are right. He compares it to fencing, where the aim is to thrust and parry, not to settle who deserves victory.
Is The Art of Controversy meant to teach people to cheat?
Schopenhauer says even a person who is right needs to know the dishonest tricks, in order to recognize and defeat them. Knowing them also lets you answer an opponent with his own weapons.
What else is in this collection besides the stratagems?
The volume adds essays on beauty and interest in art, psychological observations, aphorisms on the wisdom of life, and a piece on genius and virtue. They continue his study of how people think and feel.
What is the main message of the book?
People defend their views out of vanity, not the search for truth, so debates are often won by skill. Learn the common tricks, answer them calmly, and argue only with those who value reason.
