Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers drawn to the American West, sweeping landscapes, and unfolding romance will love this novel, as will those fascinated by life after the First World War.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Would you trade silk gowns, fast cars, and a crowd of friends for a log cabin and a hog pen? Carley Burch, a rich young woman in New York just after the First World War, never asks herself that question at first. Then a letter arrives from her fiancé, Glenn Kilbourne, postmarked Flagstaff, Arizona.

The Call of the Canyon is a novel by Zane Grey, better known for his Westerns. It is a love story, and it is also an argument about how a person should live. You meet broken veterans, restless women, and the people who change Carley.

A strange letter sends Carley across America

Carley reads Glenn's letter on a cold April day in New York and cannot decide what it means. He says he loves her more than before, but that he is not coming back just yet. Those two words, just yet, bother her aunt Mary.

Glenn came home from France gassed and shell shocked, silent and haunted. On New Year's Day he announced that he was going West. Now he writes of red canyon walls and a silence he finds sweet. Carley feels a sudden, blazing wish to go and see him.

Aunt Mary tells her to go, and not to write ahead, so he cannot say not yet. The trip is a string of small shocks. The thin air gives her a nosebleed, and the stage to Oak Creek Canyon is a wagon pulled by ragged horses. At the end stands Lolomi Lodge, beautiful and terrifying. Carley plans to take Glenn home. Carley sets out to rescue Glenn, and the West begins at once to test her.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
