Persönliche Erinnerungen von P. H. Sheridan, General der Armee der Vereinigten Staaten in short

The memoir follows one man across thirty years. Sheridan starts as a store clerk in Ohio and a rough West Point cadet. He learns supply and scouting on the frontier, then rises from staff officer to colonel to division commander to head of Grant's cavalry.

What Persönliche Erinnerungen von P. H. Sheridan, General der Armee der Vereinigten Staaten is about

How does a grocery clerk from a village in Ohio end up chasing the army of Robert E. Lee to the crossroads of Appomattox? Philip Henry Sheridan answers in his own words. He was born in 1831, rose from the bottom of his class at West Point, and became one of the Union's most trusted cavalry commanders.

This memoir was finished in 1888, the year he died. He claims no literary skill and wants only to leave a record for his comrades, his children and future historians. You get a first-hand report from a man in the middle of events, with his opinions and quarrels left in. You meet Grant, Lincoln, Custer, Bismarck and a black horse named Rienzi.

Für wen es gedacht ist. You will love this memoir if you enjoy first-hand war stories, cavalry campaigns, Grant and Lincoln, frontier life, or the voice of a plain-spoken soldier.

A grocery clerk earns his place at West Point

Sheridan is born in Albany, New York, on March 6, 1831, to Irish parents. The family settles in Somerset, Ohio. At fourteen his schooling ends, and he goes to work selling sugar, coffee and calico.

He rises to keep the books at the store of Fink and Dittoe and learns how careful accounts keep a business alive. The Mexican War makes him want to be a soldier, and he wins an appointment to West Point in 1848. His roommate Henry Slocum tutors him in algebra by lamplight.

In 1851 he lowers his bayonet at a cadet sergeant and is suspended for nearly a year. He later says he deserved it. He graduates in 1853, thirty-fourth of fifty-two. Takeaway: Sheridan begins with real disadvantages, and he admits his own early mistakes.
