Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love satire, social portraits and one woman's struggle to live on her own terms, with a town, a marriage and the pressures of conformity at the heart of the story.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Main Street is a novel by Sinclair Lewis, published in 1920. It follows Carol Kennicott, a bright young woman who marries a country doctor and moves to Gopher Prairie, a small town in Minnesota. She arrives full of plans to make the place more beautiful and more alive. The town has other ideas.

Lewis wrote the book after years of watching American towns from the inside. He grew up in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, and he knew the dull talk, the sharp gossip and the fear of anything new. He wrote with a hard eye, but also with some pity. The book sold in huge numbers at the time and made its title a name for small-town life in the United States.

What do you get from it? You get a funny and sometimes painful picture of a town and a marriage. You meet a heroine who is brave, silly, sharp and wrong by turns. You also get a question that has not gone away: how much of yourself do you give up to belong? Let us begin with Carol herself, and with the dream she carries to the prairie.

Carol dreams of remaking a town

The story opens with Carol Milford, a young woman from Mankato, Minnesota. She has studied at Blodgett College and has read widely. She believes that villages can be made beautiful, and that she is the person to do it. For a time she trains as a librarian and works in the public library in St. Paul.

Carol is not a plain heroine. She is clever, warm and full of enthusiasm, but she is also vague. She loves the idea of reform more than she knows what reform needs. She talks about town planning, art and drama as if they were switches she could turn on. Lewis lets us like her and smile at her in the same breath.

In St. Paul she meets Dr. Will Kennicott, a solid, friendly doctor from the small town of Gopher Prairie. He is a few years older and he is plainly in love. He tells her about his town with great pride, and she hears what she wants to hear. To her, a prairie town looks like a blank page waiting for her ideas.

Will is steady where Carol is restless. He likes his work, his house, his cigar and his friends. He is kind, though he is also certain he knows what a wife should want. Carol is moved by his decency and by the chance to be useful. She does not stop to ask whether he understands her at all.

So they marry, and she leaves the city with high spirits. She tells herself she will be a pioneer in a new kind of way. The reader senses that she is carrying a mirror instead of a map. The first test comes the moment the train stops at Gopher Prairie.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
