Für wen es gedacht ist
For readers who love Victorian suspense, unreliable passions and the roots of the detective and sensation novel, with secret marriages, class pride and watchful villains.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Basil is a novel by Wilkie Collins, published in 1852 when he was still a young writer, some years before The Woman in White and The Moonstone made his name. It is told in the first person by Basil himself, the younger son of a rich and proud English family. He writes out the story of one disastrous love, and he writes it as a warning and a confession.
Collins wanted to show that a tale of crime and passion could be set in ordinary modern life, among shops, omnibuses and respectable houses, and not in castles or foreign lands. Many early reviewers were shocked by this, and Collins answered them in a preface. What you get here is a fast, uneasy story of desire, secrecy and revenge, with a villain who is quiet, patient and hard to shake off. Let us begin with Basil and the family he comes from.

A proud family and a restless son
Basil is the second son of a wealthy father whose whole life rests on family name and rank. The father believes in lineage the way other men believe in religion. The elder brother, Ralph, will inherit the estate and the honor with it, while Basil is expected to behave and to keep the family pride clean.
Basil is a quiet, dreamy young man, more given to feeling than to ambition. He loves his sister Clara, and he feels the weight of his father's cold expectations. The household is orderly on the surface, but it leaves little room for warmth or for any wish that does not fit the family code.
Basil also lives with a restlessness he cannot name. He studies, he wanders London, and he watches the crowds with a curiosity that his father would call idle. He is ready for something to happen to him, and he does not know how dangerous that readiness is.
Collins builds this opening carefully because the later disaster grows from it. A son raised with strict rules and little tenderness is easily dazzled when real feeling arrives. The reader sees early that Basil's pride, his innocence and his need to be loved will all be used against him.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
