Autobiografie von Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak, oder Black Hawk in short

Black Hawk's story begins with Thunder and a dream, moves through wars and treaties, and ends in a prisoner's tour of a nation far larger than his own. One claim holds it together: the land his people lived on and farmed could not be sold, least of all by four men who may not have understood what they signed. You see the seasons of a Sauk village, its fields, dances, and graves.

What Autobiografie von Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak, oder Black Hawk is about

What would you do if the village where your fathers lie buried had been sold by four men, drunk, without your nation's consent? That is the question that drives the Autobiography of Black Hawk. In 1833 the aging Sauk leader tells the story of his life one year after losing a short war with the United States.

His central claim is simple: land cannot be sold.

Für wen es gedacht ist. You will love this book if you enjoy first-person voices from the past, frontier history seen from the other side, or a leader explaining his own choices.

The Sauk story begins with a dream

Black Hawk begins with his birth in 1767 at the Sac village on Rock River, then turns to family tradition. He traces his line to Nanamakee, a name meaning Thunder. The Great Spirit, his father Pyesa taught him, first placed the Sac nation near Montreal.

Nanamakee blackens his face and eats once a day for three years, and he keeps dreaming. A voice tells him he will meet a white man who will be a father to him. With his brothers he follows distant sounds until they find a tent. Inside is the son of the King of France, who has dreamed the same dream and sailed against his own father's laughter to meet his new children.

The Frenchman gives Nanamakee a medal and makes him war leader. The old chief Mukataquet hands over the great medicine bag, which he calls the soul of the nation. When some grumble that a young man holds so much power, Nanamakee claims he caused a violent thunderstorm. Lightning sets a tree on fire, and the grumbling stops.

The tale shows how the Sacs first saw white people: as a father to be trusted. Black Hawk later judges every father, French, Spanish, British, or American, by whether he keeps his word.

The Sauk past of dreams and duty explains why Black Hawk holds his village so firmly.
