About this book

What use is a throne when your enemy can strike through the mind?

In Robert E. Howard’s The People of the Black Circle, Yasmina inherits a kingdom and a deadly grievance. Her brother, the ruler of Vendhya, dies under a spell no guard can stop. She traces his death to the Black Seers of Mount Yimsha and seeks Conan’s help against them.

Conan leads the Afghuli hill tribesmen, but seven of his chiefs sit in a Vendhyan governor’s prison. His aims collide with Yasmina’s as pursuit draws them through dangerous mountains. Meanwhile, the sorcerers’ servant Khemsa breaks with his masters, urged on by Gitara, Yasmina’s attendant. Power, loyalty, and personal ambition make every alliance uncertain.

Is The People of the Black Circle a Conan story?

Yes. It is one of Robert E. Howard’s original Conan adventures. Conan appears as the leader of mountain tribesmen rather than as a king, thief, or solitary wanderer, and his obligations to his followers help set the action in motion.

Who are the people of the Black Circle?

The title refers to the sinister sorcerers associated with Mount Yimsha. Their influence reaches into the affairs of kingdoms, and their magic makes them dangerous in ways that armed soldiers and mountain warriors are not equipped to confront.

Where is The People of the Black Circle set?

The story takes place in Howard’s invented Hyborian Age, chiefly around Vendhya and the mountains near its frontier. The landscape and political setting draw on South Asian kingdoms and the fiercely independent tribal regions beyond their borders.
