About this book

Beyond Japan’s treaty ports lie rain-soaked mountain passes, rickety bridges, and a journey few foreign women have attempted.

Isabella Bird leaves Yokohama in 1878 and heads into Japan’s interior, bound for Hokkaido. With her young interpreter, Ito, she travels by rickshaw, horse, and foot. Mud, fleas, and slippery stones make progress hard, while quiet rice fields and kindly strangers give her reasons to keep looking.

In letters to her sister Henrietta, Bird brings the road close: wet mountain crossings, isolated villages, and the carved gates of Nikko. Unbeaten Tracks in Japan also explores homes, farming, schools, and religion. Her sharp, often funny observations show a country changing fast, though her judgments sometimes reflect the limits of her Victorian outlook.

What you’ll discover

  • An interpreter with character Meet Ito, the young interpreter whose presence helps shape Bird’s demanding journey through the interior.
  • Beauty among the cedars Visit Nikko through Bird’s delighted descriptions of carved gates, red lacquer, and gold.
  • The hard northern road Follow horses across slippery stones as rain and wind sweep the high mountain passes.
  • Ainu villages in Hokkaido Travel by horse and canoe toward river-valley villages near Biratori, alongside Bird’s attentive account.
