About this book

A track, a camp fire, a helping hand: what can life outdoors teach about living well?

In Scouting for Boys, Robert Baden-Powell turns outdoor skills into lessons in self-reliance and teamwork. His camp fire yarns mix stories, games and practical advice. Tracking, cooking, knots and first aid sit beside questions of honour: how do you earn trust, look after others and prepare to help?

First published in 1908, this handbook sets out the rules, motto and method of the Scout movement. Baden-Powell makes learning by doing central to his approach, drawing on ideas tested at Brownsea Island. Read it as practical guidance or as a window into Edwardian Britain's picture of a good citizen.

A war hero turns to the boys

The story of the book starts in South Africa. In 1899 and 1900, Baden-Powell commanded the defence of Mafeking, a small town under siege by Boer forces. News of the long siege made him a hero in Britain. He had already written Aids to Scouting in 1899, a manual that taught soldiers to observe, to track and to use their wits.
