About this book

What does the crowd take from a man who lives for its applause?

Juan Gallardo grows up hungry in the slums of Seville. The bullring offers a way out, but every step demands courage and pain. In Blood and Sand, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez follows his climb toward wealth, respect and the love of a crowd that judges his every move.

At home, his mother, Señora Angustias, prays for his safety, while his loyal wife, Carmen, longs for quiet family life. Then Doña Sol, a wealthy aristocrat, draws his attention. Between the arena and the drawing room, Gallardo faces desires that money and fame cannot make safe.
