From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A storyteller who shaped Hungarian fiction
Mór Jókai was born in Komárom, a town on the Danube, and spent most of his working life in Budapest. He began as a young writer and journalist, and he took part in the revolution of 1848 that shook the Hungarian lands. That experience of public hope and public struggle runs through his later work.
He wrote at enormous speed and in many forms. Novels like The Golden Man and Black Diamonds are the books he is best known for, but he also produced a long line of shorter tales, sketches and legends. Readers in Hungary knew his voice well, and he held their attention for decades.
