About this book
What happens when a poet turns desire, wounded pride, and polite society into targets for laughter?
In Erotic, Burlesque, and Satirical Poems, Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage brings his sharp tongue to bodies, lovers, pompous figures, and literary enemies. This collection gathers erotic verse, burlesque, and satire: poetry that speaks openly where polite verse looks away, and finds laughter in appetites it prefers to hide.
Bocage is known for tender sonnets, but here you meet the poet whose frankness shocks polite society. His poems pass from hand to hand before they can appear openly in print. Literary quarrels sharpen the attack, including his feud with José Agostinho de Macedo, a priest and writer who answers him in kind.

A restless poet in a strict Lisbon
Bocage was born in Setúbal, a port town south of Lisbon, in 1765. He trained for a career in the navy and army, but he was never a calm, obedient man. He travelled far from home, to Portuguese lands in the East, and came back to Lisbon with a reputation for brilliant talk and a poor talent for keeping out of trouble.
He joined a literary society called the New Arcadia, where members took pastoral names. His was Elmano Sadino, a name that recalls the river of his home region. In that circle poets wrote graceful, classical verse about shepherds and nature. Bocage could write that way very well, but he soon grew bored with its limits.

Who was Bocage?

What are Bocage's erotic poems about?
They speak openly and humorously about desire, lovers and the body. Bocage often uses strict classical forms like the sonnet, which makes the frank content more comic and surprising.
What does burlesque poetry mean?
Burlesque poetry treats noble subjects in a silly or low way, or common subjects in a grand style. Bocage used it to mock stiff, fashionable poetry and to make his readers laugh.
