About this book

What can a young servant do when the man who employs her refuses to accept her no?

Pamela Andrews is fifteen when her mistress dies, leaving her in the service of the woman’s son, Mr. B. He pursues her despite her refusals. She wants to protect her reputation and return to her parents, but his wealth and position give him power over her daily life.

In Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded, letters and journal entries bring you close to a conscience under pressure. Pamela records encounters, weighs her choices, and wonders whom she can trust. Her parents offer warnings and moral guidance, while her employer treats resistance as something to overcome.

Kindness That Frightens Her Parents

The first letter tells Pamela's poor father and mother that her mistress has died. On her deathbed the lady asked her son to remember poor Pamela, and the young man, whom the book calls Mr. B, keeps her in the house. He gives the servants mourning clothes and a year's wages, and he hands Pamela four gold guineas from his mother's pocket. She sends the coins home inside a little pillbox, packed so tightly that they will not jingle, and entrusts the box to John, the footman.

What is Pamela about?

Pamela tells of a fifteen-year-old maid who keeps her honesty while her young master tries to win her, trick her and hold her captive. Her letters and journal give the story, along with the unusual tension of a confinement in a lonely house.

Who is Mr. B in Pamela?

Mr. B is Pamela's master, the wealthy son of her late lady. He is proud, quick to anger, and used to getting his way. His shifting moods and methods drive the plot, and the book keeps the full name hidden.

Why is Pamela written as letters?

Richardson uses letters and a journal so you read Pamela's thoughts as they happen. The method gives the story a close, breathless feel and lets other letters from the master, parents and friends add their own voices.
