About this book
What happens when a comfortable church promises to let one question change how its members earn, spend and live?
A stranger enters First Church in Raymond, a prosperous Midwestern town, and unsettles its comfortable Sunday. Shaken by his words, pastor Henry Maxwell challenges his congregation to make a pledge: ask what Jesus would do before acting. In Charles M. Sheldon's In His Steps, that question reaches beyond worship into offices, shops and the town newspaper.
Editor Edward Norman reconsiders how he runs the Daily News. Singer Rachel Winslow faces expectations of fame and comfort, while Virginia Page wonders how to use inherited wealth well. For railroad official Alexander Powers and merchant Milton Wright, the same pledge tests business practices. Income, standing and the approval of friends are at stake as belief becomes a daily choice.

In short
In His Steps is a novel by Charles M. Sheldon, an American minister in Topeka, Kansas.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A stranger interrupts a comfortable Sunday
The novel opens in a town called Raymond, in the American Midwest. The church at the center of the story is First Church, a respectable congregation with a good choir and well-dressed members. Its pastor is the Reverend Henry Maxwell, a kind and careful preacher who writes his sermons with great attention. He is liked, and he likes his work.
One Sunday, after the sermon, a poor man who is out of work stands up in the church. He speaks quietly, not angrily. He says that he has heard many Christians talk about following Jesus, and he wonders what that means to people who do not seem to notice those who are hungry and without a job. His words are plain, and they land on a room that had not expected to be questioned.
