About this book
What can the fragments of a lost book reveal about how early Christians explained their faith?
The Preaching of Peter survives in short quotations, preserved chiefly by Clement of Alexandria in his Stromata. Traditionally attributed to the apostle Peter, it is generally understood by scholars as the work of an unknown early Christian teacher. These fragments offer a glimpse of a faith explaining itself to the world beyond its own community.
The text presents Peter as a teacher of one creator God and a critic of idol worship. It describes Christians as a new people beside Greeks and Jews, with a distinct way of worship. Another fragment depicts the risen Lord sending the apostles to preach first to Israel. Throughout, the concern is how Christians understand and defend their identity.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A lost book known through quotations
The Preaching of Peter does not survive as a whole book. Its words reach us in quotations, mostly in the Stromata of Clement of Alexandria, a Christian teacher who wrote in Egypt. Clement cites it several times and treats it with respect, as a record of what Peter taught.
Other early writers also knew it. Origen, writing in the third century, mentions it and says he was unsure whether it truly came from Peter. Eusebius, the church historian of the fourth century, listed it among writings that the church did not accept as Scripture. So readers from the start disagreed about its standing.

What is the Preaching of Peter?
It is an early Christian writing in Greek, attributed to the apostle Peter and dated by most scholars to the early second century. Only fragments survive, quoted by writers such as Clement of Alexandria and Origen.
Did the apostle Peter really write the Preaching of Peter?
Most scholars doubt it. Clement treated it as Peter's teaching, but Origen was unsure and Eusebius did not accept it. Today it is generally seen as a later work written in Peter's name.
Why is the Preaching of Peter not in the Bible?
It was not widely accepted as apostolic, and some early writers questioned it. It never won a place in the lists of books the churches recognised as Scripture.
