About this book
What happens when a vision of the world's last days becomes a test of faith, power, and endurance?
The Apocalypse of Daniel borrows the voice of the biblical prophet to imagine a world of wars, troubled kingdoms, and a final ruler of evil. In this anonymous Byzantine Christian text, Daniel sees a future where deception threatens believers and divine judgment promises an answer to earthly terror.
This work belongs to a tradition of visions, not a single fixed text. Its Greek manuscripts differ in wording and length. Outside the Jewish and Christian biblical canons, it offers a window into how later Christians read Daniel's visions through their own political fears and spiritual hopes.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A later writer borrows Daniel's voice
The Book of Daniel is a part of the Hebrew Bible set in the Babylonian exile. Its second half records visions of beasts rising from the sea, of kingdoms that rise and fall, and of a final kingdom that God himself establishes. Readers in later centuries treated Daniel as the great prophet of history's end, and his name drew new writing toward it.
This is how the Apocalypse of Daniel came to exist. A later author wrote in Daniel's name, a practice scholars call pseudepigraphy. It was common in ancient religious writing, and it gave a new message the weight of an old and trusted voice. Readers of the time understood that a famous name could carry a text.

What is the Apocalypse of Daniel about?
It is a vision of the last days told in the name of the prophet Daniel. It describes wars and troubles, a final ruler of evil called the Antichrist, and God's judgment, written to encourage believers to stay faithful.
Who wrote the Apocalypse of Daniel?
No one knows. It was written under the name of the biblical prophet Daniel, a common ancient practice. Scholars think the Greek version comes from an unknown Byzantine Christian writer, with later copyists adding and changing material.
Is the Apocalypse of Daniel part of the Bible?
No. It is not in the Jewish or Christian canons. It is far later than the books those communities accepted and was written under a borrowed name, so it was not counted among scripture.
