About this book
What might heaven reveal about the world below—and the way a person should live?
In 2 Enoch, the patriarch from Genesis leaves his home under the guidance of two luminous angels. According to the text, they carry him through heavens filled with wonders and terrors: storehouses of snow, angelic guardians, prisons of fallen angels, and paradise reserved for the righteous.
This ancient Jewish text, written by an unknown author in Enoch’s name, brings cosmic mysteries beside questions of human conduct. Its account explores creation, judgment, and the duties of the soul. Preserved in Slavonic, it also offers a glimpse into mystical traditions that shape early Jewish and Christian thought.

A righteous man is called from home
The book opens with Enoch at home at the age of 365. He is a righteous man, and he is troubled in his sleep. Two men with shining faces stand before his bed. Their feet are white as snow and their faces glow like the sun. They tell him not to fear, because they have been sent to take him up to heaven.
Before he leaves, Enoch gathers his household. His son Methuselah and the other children come to him, and he tells them that he must go. He tells them to keep the ways of the Lord and not to turn aside. This scene sets a pattern that returns at the end of the book. Enoch is both a seer and a teacher, and what he learns above is meant to be passed on below.

What is 2 Enoch about?
It tells how the patriarch Enoch is led through the heavens by angels, shown the secrets of creation, and told to record them. He then returns to earth to teach his sons how to live justly.
What is the difference between 1 Enoch and 2 Enoch?
They are separate books about the same figure. 1 Enoch survives in Ethiopic and deals with the Watchers and judgment. 2 Enoch survives in Slavonic and describes the ascent through the heavens and creation.
When was 2 Enoch written?
Scholars disagree. Many suggest the first century, in a Jewish setting, perhaps in Egypt. Others argue for a later date or for Christian additions. There is no single settled answer.
