About this book

A small hole in a boarding-house wall opens onto lives that no one means to share.

In Henri Barbusse’s The Inferno, a lonely man takes a room in a Paris boarding house. A small opening lets him see and hear the room next door. He watches lovers meet, sickness bring pain, and private doubts emerge. Ordinary life unfolds before a stranger who remains unseen.

But watching does not leave him untouched. What he sees pushes him toward questions about desire, solitude, death, and belief. Barbusse turns a simple act of spying into an intense study of hidden lives—and of the solitary mind trying to understand what lies before it.

What is The Inferno by Henri Barbusse about?

It is about a lonely man in a Paris boarding house who watches the guests in the next room through a hole in the wall. What he sees leads him to think about love, death, faith and isolation.

Is Barbusse's The Inferno the same as Dante's Inferno?

No. Barbusse's book is a French novel from 1908, originally called L'Enfer. The title nods to Dante's idea of hell, but here hell is the human world, where people live walled off from one another.

Why is The Inferno called a philosophical novel?

Because little happens in the outward plot. The scenes mainly serve the watcher's thoughts on desire, mortality, belief and loneliness, so the book works more as a reflection than as an adventure.
