About this book
What does peace feel like when you still remember the hunger that came before it?
In George Gissing’s The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft, an invented writer looks back on years of poverty in London. A small, unexpected income now lets him live in a country cottage and stop writing for bread. His days hold walks, meals and books, but memories of hardship remain close.
These notebooks offer reflections rather than a plot, arranged as Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Ryecroft notices flowers, shifting light and the lanes near home. He returns to favourite writers and asks what makes life worth living. His calm has an edge: noise and crowds trouble him, while uncertain health makes his peace feel fragile.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A pen laid down after thirty years
The book opens with a preface by Ryecroft's friend, who tells how Ryecroft lived. For much of his working life he earns his bread by hackwork, reviewing, translating and writing articles. At fifty he learned that a dead friend had left him an annuity of three hundred pounds a year.
He left London within weeks and settled in a cottage near Exeter, with a housekeeper to look after him. He vowed never to write for print again. His private notebooks hold thoughts and memories, with only the month marking each entry. The reflections follow the changing seasons.
