About this book
What if saving someone you love means breaking rules that protect everyone else?
Ojo lives with his quiet uncle, Unc Nunkie, in a remote corner of Munchkin country. Food runs short, and Ojo believes he is unlucky. Then a magical accident turns his uncle and Margolotte into marble statues. The Crooked Magician can make a remedy, but Ojo must search across Oz for rare ingredients.
Along comes Scraps, a girl made from scraps of cloth and meant to serve in a household. Ojo adds extra qualities to her brains before she comes to life, and obedience is not her strength. With a vain glass cat and the square-bodied Woozy among his companions, his rescue quest becomes a tangle of clashing ideas and difficult choices.

In short
The Patchwork Girl of Oz is a children's fantasy by L. Frank Baum, the ninth of his Oz books, published in 1913.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A hungry boy leaves the forest
The story begins in a lonely round house deep in the Blue Forest of the Munchkin Country. Ojo lives there with his uncle, Unc Nunkie, who is known as the Silent One. Unc speaks so seldom that Ojo has learned to read whole sentences in a single word. On this day the cupboard holds nothing but dry bread, and the bread tree in the yard has only two loaves left, neither ripe.
Ojo reasons that no one starves in Oz, but you may have to go where the food is. His uncle, who rarely argues, finally stays awake all night thinking. At dawn he wakes the boy with one word, which is come. They latch the door and climb the mountain path toward the house of their nearest neighbor.
