About this book
What is fortune worth when cold water, hard weather, and danger stand between you and your future?
In Kirk Munroe’s The Copper Princess, a young man heads into the Lake Superior mining country to find his place in the world. Copper draws people seeking work and wealth. Among mines and remote camps, his search for fortune becomes a test of hard work, loyalty, and survival.
This is a country of busy settlements, cold water, and hard weather, where people depend on one another. Friendship matters as much as money. In short
The Copper Princess is an adventure novel by Kirk Munroe, set in the copper country of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, on the shore of Lake Superior. From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A rescue on a moving train
The story opens at Hancock station, where the narrow-gauge train for Red Jacket is just pulling out. A young man runs from the waiting room and tries to jump aboard the smoking car. He misses the step and falls between two cars, clinging to a handrail with the wheels beneath him. People on the platform cry out in horror and turn away, sure they are about to see a man killed.
One passenger does not turn away. Richard Peveril, neatly dressed and powerfully built, drops his bag, throws himself over the guardrail and braces his knees against its supports. Stretching his arms to their limit, he catches the fallen man by the coat collar and hauls him up onto the platform. The train carries on, and almost nobody on board notices what has happened.
