About this book
What happens when a wish or fear takes hold—and begins to rule every choice?
In The Beckoning Hand, and Other Stories, Grant Allen gathers thirteen tales of mystery, obsession, and the unexpected. Strangeness and strong desire drive these short pieces. Each offers a story small enough for a single sitting, with the uneasy pleasure of not knowing what comes next.
Allen writes novels and magazine tales as well as essays on science and nature. Here, his short fiction belongs to a Victorian world whose manners and social rules shape what people say and do. The prose asks you to settle into its longer sentences and give its surprises room to work.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A striking bride and a beckoning hand
The title story is told by Harry Tristram, a young man of twenty-two with a comfortable estate in Devonshire and a yacht moored near London Bridge. He first sees Césarine Vivian from the next seat at a London theater, where a French company is playing Faustine. His old friend Irene Latham points her out, praising her dark, queenly looks. Harry admires her at once, yet something in her gaze repels him, and he cannot look away. Irene, who half expects a proposal from him, is the person he ought to be thinking of.
During the play a cry of fire goes up, and the audience stampedes for the doors. Césarine alone stays calm and walks slowly out, and Harry steers her and the Lathams to safety. Then she remembers her opera glasses and goes back for them, and he follows her into the smoke. The episode shows her cool nerve, and it fixes her in his mind. She gives him her name and her address as they leave in a cab, and he is already in her orbit.
