About this book

What does ambition cost when your family, your employer, and the mills all press against your freedom?

In Winston Churchill’s The Dwelling Place of Light, Janet Bumpus works as a stenographer in a New England mill office. Intelligent and restless, she refuses to let her birth decide her future. But limited means, family expectations, and an employer’s power narrow the choices before her.

As labor unrest grows, Janet’s world opens onto a struggle between workers and mill owners over wages and working conditions. Churchill brings that public conflict close to home, where money, desire, and disappointment shape daily life. America’s promise of opportunity faces a hard question: who has the power to make a different life?

What you’ll discover

  • An ambition under pressure Follow Janet’s hunger for a life larger than the circumstances she inherits.
  • The mill office world Enter a workplace where earning a living means facing an employer’s power.
  • A family’s narrow horizons See how limited means turn hopes into strains within the Bumpus household.
  • Workers against mill owners Explore the struggle over wages, working conditions, and whose suffering deserves attention.
