About this book
A marriage without love binds two lives together as revolution pulls the French court apart.
In Alexandre Dumas’s The Countess of Charny, Andrée de Taverney carries the pride of an old noble family and the pain of a hidden past. Marie Antoinette arranges her marriage to Count Olivier de Charny, a naval officer devoted to the queen. Honor binds him to a wife he barely knows.
Beyond their marriage, hunger, rumor and political speeches drive crowds toward Versailles. Louis XVI struggles to meet the crisis, while Doctor Gilbert hopes for change and fears violence. Moving between palace and street, Dumas brings private loyalties into a public struggle where the royal family has less control with every step.

A marriage made for the wrong reasons
The story opens with a woman whose life has been shaped by other people's choices. Andrée de Taverney comes from a noble family that is poor in money and rich in pride. She has been close to the queen, and she carries a painful past that she keeps hidden behind a cold, controlled manner.
The queen arranges for Andrée to marry Count Olivier de Charny. On the surface this is a kindness, and it is also a convenience. Charny is a brave and honorable officer, and his devotion to Marie Antoinette is deep and much more than duty. The marriage tidies up a delicate situation at court, but it leaves the husband and wife as strangers.

What is The Countess of Charny about?
It follows the fall of the French monarchy through Andrée de Taverney and her husband, Count Charny, whose marriage is arranged by the queen. Real events of the Revolution frame their private struggle between duty and feeling.
Do I need to read the earlier books first?
No. The novel belongs to a series that includes Joseph Balsamo, The Queen's Necklace and Ange Pitou, and it echoes them, but it explains enough of the past that you can follow it alone.
Is The Countess of Charny a true story?
Not entirely. Dumas wrote it in the early 1850s using real people and events, such as Marie Antoinette, Mirabeau and Lafayette, but the central household and many scenes are invented.
