About this book
Alone on a reef, a misjudged man pits his tools, patience and silent love against the sea.
On Guernsey, Gilliatt lives apart from the people who call him a sorcerer. He secretly loves Deruchette, the lively niece of shipowner Mess Lethierry. When Lethierry’s beloved steamship Durande is wrecked on the Douvres rocks, Gilliatt takes on a seemingly impossible task: recovering its engine.
With a small boat, tools and a few supplies, Gilliatt makes camp among the rocks. Weather, tides and hard labor stand between him and the prize he longs for. In Toilers of the Sea, Victor Hugo brings this struggle close, while a love triangle and Captain Clubin’s hidden plans give the island story its human tensions.

In short
Toilers of the Sea is a novel by Victor Hugo, published in 1866. Hugo wrote it during his long exile from France, on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A small island seen by an exile
The novel opens on Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands, which lie close to the coast of France but belong to the British crown. Hugo knew the place well, because he had settled there after leaving France when Napoleon III took power. He writes about its customs, its rough coast, its stone houses and its mix of French speech and English rule. He pays attention to the sea all around it.
The island people are fishermen, sailors, farmers and merchants, and they live by the weather. Hugo describes how they talk, how they gather, and what they fear. Many of them believe in ghosts, witches and omens. Superstition is part of the setting, and it will matter later, when it shapes how a whole parish treats one man.
