About this book
In the frozen Canadian wilderness, love gives people something to protect—and loyalty has a cost.
The Heart of Unaga by Ridgwell Cullum brings adventure and romance into a land shaped by snow, ice and long distances. Here, the wilderness is never merely scenery. Cold and isolation limit every choice, while survival depends on the bonds between people who need one another for warmth, food and safety.
Cullum places love and loyalty under the pressure of hardship. Affection offers a reason to keep fighting, but it also invites risk, rivalry and pain. His direct, vigorous storytelling keeps danger close and the landscape vivid, drawing you into a frontier world where caring for someone can make a hard choice harder.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A tall tale and a two-year order
The book opens at a police camp on the Allowa Indian Reserve, beside the Caribou River. Inspector Steve Allenwood sits at a fire with two scouts, Julyman and Oolak. Julyman insists that the Indians of the far north sleep through the whole winter, waking only to eat and drink a spirit brew before they sleep again. Steve smiles and does not believe a word, though the story will matter far more than he knows.
Steve has a young wife, Nita, and a baby daughter named Coqueline. That same night Nita comes home from a dance in the township of Deadwater, wrapped in a buffalo robe beside Hervey Garstaing, the Indian Agent whom every Indian hates. Julyman notices how close they sit and guesses what troubles his chief. A corporal then rides in with an order that Steve must place himself at the Agent's disposal.
