About this book
Prayer, warning, comfort and argument meet in a sacred text that shapes how Muslims understand faith and daily life.
The Koran, also spelled Quran, is the central book of Islam. Muslims believe it contains God's words revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Its 114 chapters, called surahs, move between worship, moral commands and stories of earlier prophets. Rather than following a single story, the text returns to questions of belief, human conduct and judgment.
Al-Fatiha, The Opening, begins with a prayer that Muslims recite throughout their daily worship. Elsewhere, Adam's story explores temptation and forgiveness. Chapters including The Women, The Table Spread and The Spoils address community life. Across these different passages, the text presents the oneness of God as its central teaching and connects faith with justice, responsibility and care for others.

A cave near Mecca starts the revelation
Islamic tradition tells that Muhammad was a merchant of Mecca, born around 570 in the tribe of Quraysh. He was known as honest and thoughtful. In his forties he often withdrew to a cave called Hira on a mountain outside the city to pray and reflect. Mecca at that time was a trading town with a sacred shrine, the Kaaba, which was surrounded by images of many gods and spirits.
In the month of Ramadan, according to tradition, the angel Gabriel came to Muhammad in the cave and commanded him to recite. The first words given are found at the start of the ninety-sixth chapter, named The Clot. They speak of God as the one who created humankind and who taught by the pen. Muhammad, tradition says, was shaken by the experience and went home to his wife Khadija, who comforted him and believed him. She is remembered as the first Muslim.

What is the Quran about?
The Quran is about the oneness of God, guidance for human life, the stories of earlier prophets, worship, justice and law, and the Day of Judgment. It is a mix of prayer, teaching and address, not a single story.
How is the Quran organized?
It has 114 chapters called surahs, made of verses called ayat. After the short opening prayer, the chapters run roughly from longest to shortest, not in the order they were revealed. It is also split into thirty parts for reading.
Is the Quran the same as the Bible?
No. They are separate books. The Quran shares figures with the Bible, such as Adam, Abraham, Moses, Mary and Jesus, but tells their stories differently and, for Muslims, is a distinct revelation given in Arabic to Muhammad.
