About this book
Beyond the familiar Hudson River, a wider world waits on the shores of Nova Scotia.
In Evelyn Raymond's Dorothy's Travels, a young heroine leaves home to see more of the world. Her journey leads from the Hudson River in New York toward the coast of Nova Scotia. Rivers and harbors, trains and steamers give this cheerful adventure its changing scenery, while new places and people invite Dorothy to look beyond the familiar.
This is a gentle travel tale, where courage, kindness and good sense matter more than sharp edges. Dorothy stands at the heart of a story about discovery and learning something about herself along the way. The pleasure lies in following her north, sharing the sense of possibility that comes when home gives way to a wider horizon.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A mountain friend sails too far
The story opens on a summer morning at a Hudson River landing. Dorothy is leaving on the steamer Mary Powell with her close school friend Molly Breckenridge and their teacher, Miss Greatorex. Their schoolmates Jim Barlow and Monty Stark have just jumped ashore as the gangplank is pulled in. Then Dorothy sees that Alfaretta Babcock, her untaught friend from the mountain, is still aboard.
Alfaretta came only to say goodbye. At the last second she was seized by a wish to ride a little way on the boat, though she has four cents in her purse. She explains that it is lonely in the mountains and that she cannot see why some people have everything and others have nothing. Her tears and her rough grammar show how much this friendship means to her.
