In short
The Spy is a novel of the American Revolution by James Fenimore Cooper, published in 1821. It was his second book and the one that made his name.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A family caught between two armies
The story opens in 1780 at the Locusts, the country house of Mr. Wharton, a gentleman of New York. He is a quiet man who wants no part in the war. His sympathies lean toward the Crown, yet he has not taken up arms for it, and he hopes that staying calm will keep his property safe. He lives with two daughters, Sarah and Frances, and a servant named Caesar Thompson, who is loyal to the family and speaks in a dialect Cooper renders on the page.
The house stands in the Neutral Ground, and that placement shapes everything. Armies pass through, and so do armed bands who rob farms and call it patriotism or loyalty. Cooper names two of them, the Skinners, who claim to side with the Americans, and the Cow-boys, who claim to side with the British. In practice both prey on farmers. The Whartons live with the constant fear that a knock at the door will bring soldiers or thieves.

It is a novel set in 1780 in Westchester County, New York. A peddler named Harvey Birch is suspected of spying, while a divided family and a young cavalry officer deal with loyalty and duty during the Revolutionary War.
What is the Neutral Ground in The Spy?
The Neutral Ground is the stretch of Westchester County lying between the British lines and the American lines. Neither army fully controlled it, so armed gangs and raiders preyed on local farms.
