About this book
What is a crown worth when taking it costs peace—and love must answer to duty?
In A Son of the Immortals, Louis Tracy brings love into conflict with royalty. A crown taken by force carries a price, and private feeling collides with public duty. This romantic adventure turns on a question: what happens when the demands of rank stand in the way of the heart?
The novel belongs to the old-fashioned adventure tradition of royal intrigue, danger and devotion. Its world holds palaces, roads and hidden meetings, with strong feelings and clear lines between right and wrong. At its center lies the uneasy promise of power: a crown taken unjustly does not bring its wearer peace.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A Paris artist meets a prince
The story opens on a May morning in Paris. Joan Vernon, a lively American art student, leaves her cheap lodging near the Sorbonne and crosses the city to the Louvre. She is copying Caravaggio's The Fortune Teller in the Grande Galerie. On the Pont Neuf she meets a young man she has been seeing for three weeks, Alec Delgrado.
Alec is a polo player and a gentleman of leisure. He walks her to the Louvre and carries her easel. He is far from an idler by nature, but he has been living on a small allowance. When Joan presses him about his name, he admits that what the artist Rudin said at their first meeting was simply true. He is a Serene Highness, Prince Alexis Delgrado, son of a Kosnovian prince living in exile.
