About this book
What happens when childhood wonder meets a world of hunger, fear and cruelty?
William Blake sets two ways of seeing side by side in this collection of short poems. Songs of Innocence opens with a piper, a valley and a child on a cloud who asks for a song about a lamb. Play and trust fill this world, but shadows fall across it too.
Songs of Experience answers with anger and doubt. Its opening Bard calls to the fallen earth, and Earth speaks back. Across the collection, The Lamb faces The Tyger, while paired versions of The Chimney Sweeper reveal different views of suffering. Blake asks you to feel both innocence and experience, without choosing a simple winner.

In short
Songs of Innocence and of Experience is a book of short poems by William Blake, the English poet, painter and engraver. Songs of Innocence appeared in 1789.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Blake made words and pictures together
William Blake was an engraver by trade, and he made this book as an engraver would. He did not hand a manuscript to a printer. He etched each poem and its border onto copper plates, printed the pages himself, and colored them by hand. Because of this, no two early copies look exactly alike. Songs of Innocence came out in 1789, and the larger book with Experience followed in 1794.
The pictures are not decoration. A tree may curl around the lines like a vine, a child may leap from the margin, or a figure may sit alone under a heavy sky. Often the picture says something the words leave out. Sometimes it quietly disagrees with them. A reader who sees only the plain text misses part of the poem, so it helps to look at the plates as you read.

What is Songs of Innocence and of Experience about?
It is a book of short poems that views the world in two ways. Innocence shows a child's trusting joy, and Experience shows the pain, injustice and doubt that adults see. Many poems in the two halves answer each other.
What does the title Songs of Innocence and of Experience mean?
Blake describes the two as contrary states of the human soul. Innocence is trust and joy. Experience is awareness of suffering and power. He treats both as real ways of seeing, not as a simple before and after.
What is the poem The Tyger about?
It is a series of questions about a fierce, beautiful animal and the creator who made it. It asks how a maker of the gentle Lamb could also make something so frightening. Blake leaves the question open.
