About this book
Can a master jewel thief escape his old life—and earn the trust that matters most?
Michael Lanyard, the Paris jewel thief known as the Lone Wolf, wants to live by a better code. But reclaiming his good name means more than turning away from crime. In Alias the Lone Wolf, Louis Joseph Vance sends him racing across Europe, driven by honor, love, and the wish to be trusted again.
The Great War is over, but Europe remains unsettled: fortunes are lost, travelers carry new names, and governments are nervous. Lanyard moves through this changing world in a chase built on schemes, disguises, and narrow escapes. From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A spy is sent out to walk
The book begins in London, in the rooms of a man known as André Duchemin. His visitor is Wertheimer, a senior man in the British Secret Service. Wertheimer teases him about his age, accepts a resignation Duchemin offers half in jest, and then reveals the real purpose of his call. Duchemin has made enemies among the Bolsheviks, and word has come that his name is marked for death. He must leave England within a day, with passports and money, and no one will ask where he goes.
Duchemin is left to decide. Wertheimer has left a copy of Stevenson's Travels with a Donkey on the chair, and the hint is plain. The Cévennes, a thinly peopled corner of southern France, seem the safest place in Europe. He crosses the Channel by a secret route and begins his walk at Le Monastier.
