By the Library of Alexandria · 2 minute read · Updated 23 Ott 2026

In short

  • Dr Livesey is the local doctor and magistrate in Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.
  • He helps plan the treasure voyage and keeps a level head when danger threatens the expedition.
  • His fairness and courage make him a steady ally to Jim Hawkins and the loyal men.

Who Dr Livesey is

Dr Livesey first appears at the Admiral Benbow, where he comes to treat Jim Hawkins's sick father. When Billy Bones draws a knife on him, the doctor stays calm and warns him against using it.

His calm manner goes with a firm sense of right and wrong. He is brave without being reckless, and he treats even his enemies with fairness.

Dr Livesey and the others in the story

Jim brings the packet from Billy Bones's chest to Dr Livesey and Squire Trelawney. Together they discover the treasure map, and the doctor helps plan the voyage to the island.

Livesey worries about the squire's loose talk and listens seriously to Captain Smollett's concerns. When Smollett questions the crew and the handling of weapons, Livesey recognises his good sense.

How Dr Livesey changes

As the expedition becomes dangerous, Livesey's role reaches beyond medical care and planning. On the island, he helps the loyal party hold the stockade and fights beside Captain Smollett.

For part of the story, he also takes over the telling from Jim. His calm account shows how few supplies and men the loyal party has against the pirates.
