A chi è rivolto

For readers who love ghost stories with atmosphere, short lyric poems about love and loss, and old Spanish towns and legends.

Che cos’è questo libro

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer wrote in Spain in the middle of the nineteenth century, and he died young, in 1870. He left two bodies of work that Spanish readers still know by heart. One is the Rimas, a small set of short, plain poems about love, loss and the act of writing itself. The other is the Leyendas, a group of legends and tales of ghosts, curses, enchanted places and doomed desire. Most of his work reached readers in newspapers, and the poems were gathered into a book only after his death.

This selection gives you both sides of him, along with some of his prose sketches. You get poems that fit in a few lines and tales set in Toledo, Seville, Soria and the mountains of Aragon. You also get a quiet, musical voice that treats the unseen as something close and real. Bécquer is often named as the poet who led Spanish verse away from loud rhetoric toward a softer, more private tone. Let us begin with the poems, since they tell you most about how he thinks.

A short life and a quiet revolution

Bécquer was born in Seville into a family of painters, and he grew up around brushes, canvases and talk of art. His brother Valeriano was a painter, and the two were close for most of their lives. Gustavo moved to Madrid to make his name as a writer, and money was always short. He worked as a journalist and held minor official posts, and he wrote the pieces we now prize in the gaps between that work.

His age in Spanish letters is called late Romanticism. Earlier Romantic poets in Spain often wrote in a grand, speech-making style, full of big gestures and loud feeling. Bécquer chose another road. He wanted a poem to be simple, brief and almost whispered, as if feeling arrived before the words did.

That choice shaped what came after him. Later Spanish poets, including major names of the twentieth century, spoke of him as a source. They admired how little he needed to say, and how much a few plain images could carry. When you read him, you meet a writer who trusts the reader to hear what is left unsaid.

The selection holds three kinds of writing. There are the short poems, the longer legends and the prose sketches in which he describes places and moods. All three share one habit of mind. He treats a mood, a landscape or a face as something that may hold a presence beyond itself.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Opere scelte

What are the Rimas by Bécquer about?

The Rimas are short poems about love, poetry itself, loss, loneliness and death. They are written in plain language with simple rhyme and often end on an image or a question, not an answer.

What are the Leyendas by Bécquer?

The Leyendas are prose legends set in places such as Toledo, Seville and Soria. They mix local folklore with ghosts, enchanted figures and doomed love, and they are told in an atmospheric style.

Why is Bécquer important in Spanish literature?

He is seen as a bridge from loud Romantic verse to a quieter, more personal poetry. Many later Spanish poets named him as an influence because of his simplicity and suggestive images.

Is Bécquer hard to read?

Not usually. His sentences are short and his poems use everyday words. The legends have old-fashioned settings and some religious and historical background, but the stories are easy to follow and short.

What is the poem of the dark swallows?

It is one of the best-known Rimas. The speaker says swallows will return to the balcony each year, but the swallows and flowers of his shared past will not return. He will not be loved again as he loved her. It is a poem about grief and memory.
