A chi è rivolto

For readers who love early Christian and Jewish writings, are curious about the Nag Hammadi find, and wonder why Melchizedek mattered so much. Its heavenly visions, prayers and teachings on baptism invite exploration of early Christian thought.

Che cos’è questo libro

Melchizedek is a short and badly damaged text from ancient Egypt. It survives in Coptic in a papyrus book found in 1945 near Nag Hammadi, and scholars think it was translated from a Greek original, probably in the third century. No one knows who wrote it. It belongs to the group of writings often called Gnostic, and it is one of the few that put a figure from Genesis at the centre.

The hero is Melchizedek, the mysterious priest-king who blesses Abraham in the book of Genesis. Here he receives visions from heavenly messengers, prays, and learns about the coming of a savior. Baptism and the invoking of heavenly powers also appear. You will hear who Melchizedek was in older tradition, how the text is built, what its visions teach, and why it stands outside the Bible. First, the priest himself.

Who Melchizedek was before this text

Melchizedek first appears in Genesis 14. He is king of Salem and priest of God Most High, and he brings out bread and wine and blesses Abraham. Then he vanishes from the story. That brief scene left readers with many questions.

Later writers filled the gap. Psalm 110 speaks of a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. The New Testament letter to the Hebrews reads him as a sign of Christ, a priest without recorded beginning or end. Other Jewish writings, including a fragment found at Qumran, also gave him a heavenly role, though that fragment is a different text from this one.

The Melchizedek of the Nag Hammadi text grows out of this long habit of wondering. He is not just a figure of the past. He becomes a seer who receives secret teaching, and the text ties him closely to the savior whom Christians call Jesus Christ.

That’s 1 of 4 key points.

Questions about Melchizedek

What is the Melchizedek text in the Nag Hammadi library?

It is a fragmentary Coptic work from the Nag Hammadi codices, found in Egypt in 1945. It presents Melchizedek receiving visions and teaching, and it speaks of a savior and of baptism.

Who was Melchizedek in the Bible?

Melchizedek is the king of Salem and priest of God Most High in Genesis 14, who blesses Abraham. He is also mentioned in Psalm 110 and in the letter to the Hebrews.

When was the Nag Hammadi Melchizedek written?

Scholars usually place the Greek original around the third century, though they do not all agree. The Coptic copy survives in a codex dated to the fourth century.

Is the Nag Hammadi Melchizedek the same as the Qumran Melchizedek?

No. The Qumran text, known as 11QMelchizedek, is a Hebrew Jewish fragment about a heavenly judge. The Nag Hammadi work is a separate Coptic text with Christian and Gnostic features.

Why is Melchizedek not in the Bible?

It was not accepted into the Jewish or Christian canons, partly because its teaching about Christ and the heavenly world differed from that of the main churches. It survived only in Egypt.
