About this book

What if silence, daily prayer, and generosity offer a different measure of a life well lived?

In The Soul of the Indian: An Interpretation, Charles Alexander Eastman, also called Ohiyesa, describes Dakota spiritual life from within. A Santee Dakota physician and writer, he brings his upbringing to questions of God, family, and right living. His short chapters invite you to encounter beliefs often dismissed or misunderstood by the society around him.

Eastman explores the Great Mystery, prayer at sunrise, the teaching of children, and the place of silence in building character. He also examines land, property, honesty, and generosity. His calm voice grows pointed as he compares Native beliefs with Christian practice, asking readers to look beyond familiar judgments and consider how people live their faith.

What you’ll discover

  • The Great Mystery Explore Eastman’s account of an unseen power that Dakota belief does not seek to define.
  • Prayer in daily life Picture silent thanks at sunrise, where Eastman places prayer within the rhythm of ordinary life.
  • Reverence begins at home Consider how, in Eastman’s telling, family life shapes a child’s spiritual understanding from the beginning.
  • The strength of silence Discover why Eastman presents quiet and solitude as foundations of character rather than signs of weakness.
  • Values tested by conduct Follow his challenge to prejudice through accounts of honesty, generosity, and the gap between belief and practice.

Who will love it

You will love this book if you enjoy comparative religion, nature writing, Native American history, or a thoughtful personal voice. It suits anyone curious about courage, generosity, and silence.

In short

Picture a young man climbing the highest hill in his country at sunset. He wears only moccasins and a breechclout, and carries only symbolic offerings, because he believes God places no value on material things.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

Worship was silent, solitary, and found in nature

Eastman begins with the Great Mystery, his name for the Eternal that surrounds and holds everything. Worship of it was silent, because speech is always weak. It was solitary, because God is thought to be closer to a person alone. And it was free of self-interest, because it asked for nothing.
