A Fireman Wins a Run and an Enemy
The story opens in the roundhouse at Stanley Junction on a stormy night. Ralph hears his name called for the Dover slow freight. He is in his second month as a fireman, and this run could become a steady one.
Then Jim Evans bursts in, flushed and unsteady, two minutes late. He claims the run as his own. Foreman Tim Forgan says the rules count and Ralph was there first. Ralph offers to give up the run if Evans will sign the pledge, work steadily and hand his wages to his wife. Evans agrees at once, but veteran engineer Dave Adams says he would promise anything and never keep his word.
