About this book
What happens when a man who trusts imperial power falls in love with a woman it cannot command?
In Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Quo Vadis, Rome glitters with wealth and spectacle under Nero. Marcus Vinicius, a young Roman officer, becomes fascinated by Lygia, a Christian woman and royal hostage. His uncle Petronius knows how to use the emperor’s court to help him pursue her. But Lygia refuses to surrender her conscience to Roman power.
The search draws Vinicius toward a community whose loyalties rest beyond rank, wealth, and imperial favor. Around them, banquets and political schemes contrast with modest homes and secret gatherings. As Nero’s vanity and cruelty threaten personal safety, love becomes a test of belief: can Vinicius learn to respect what he cannot possess?

Petronius rules taste while Vinicius falls in love
The story opens in the house of Petronius, a nobleman who wakes at midday after one of Nero's feasts. He is the judge of elegance at court. Nothing is serious to him except beauty.
His nephew Marcus Vinicius arrives, newly home from the war against the Parthians. He is young and used to getting what he wants. Nursed after an accident in the house of Aulus Plautius, a retired general, he saw a girl bathing in a garden fountain at daybreak. Since then he has wanted nothing else.

What is Quo Vadis about?
It tells of the love between Marcus Vinicius, a Roman officer, and Lygia, a hostage girl who is secretly Christian. Their story unfolds in the court of Nero, where feasts, fear and early Christian faith pull against each other.
What does Quo Vadis mean?
It is Latin for Where are you going? The words are a question that comes late in the book, and they give the novel its title. They carry the idea of choosing a path under pressure.
Is Quo Vadis a true story?
The setting and many people are real, including Nero, Petronius, Seneca, Peter and Paul. The love story of Vinicius and Lygia is invented. Sienkiewicz wrote it in the 1890s as a historical novel about Rome under Nero.
