About this book
In rough frontier country, speed and skill matter—but so does the courage to stand by a friend.
Deerfoot in the Mountains by Edward Sylvester Ellis follows a young Native American hunter and runner through the American frontier. Deerfoot brings tracking skill, speed and calm judgment to his role as a trusted guide and friend to his white companions. Around them, forests, rivers and mountains offer beauty and danger.
Long journeys on foot bring hardship, while weather and wildlife make the country a place that demands care. Loyalty matters as much as outdoor skill: danger puts the choice between self-preservation and friendship into sharp focus. Ellis tells this adventure in a direct style, with short chapters, quick action and scenes that are easy to picture.

In short
What would you cross a mountain range on foot to get back? For Deerfoot the Shawanoe, the answer is a black stallion named Whirlwind.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
The party turns east up the Columbia
After gazing at the Pacific from a rise near the Columbia, Deerfoot and his friends begin the long way home. Deerfoot speaks of a time when white settlers will fill the land, and he hopes the two peoples will live side by side in peace. Then the work begins, because paddling upstream means swift water and exhausting portages.
Deerfoot holds to strict principles. One freezing night, the boys long to burn lumber from a pile that belongs to someone else. Deerfoot asks them what two and two make, and he says that taking the wood now would be a sin because they know it has an owner. So they shiver and sleep, and by morning snow covers them like blankets.
