About this book

What can you trust when every belief you hold is open to doubt?

In Six Metaphysical Meditations, René Descartes sets aside every belief he can question and searches for something certain. Written as one person's private thoughts over six days, this short work makes doubt a method. You follow each step as familiar certainties give way to a search for firm ground.

Descartes wants to give science a secure foundation through reason. Along the way, he examines his own existence, offers arguments for God, and asks why people make mistakes. The inquiry reaches beyond thought itself: can he know that material things exist, and how can mind and body be distinct yet united?

What you’ll discover

  • Doubt with a purpose Watch Descartes question accepted opinions to test whether knowledge can stand on firmer ground.
  • One point of certainty Follow the search for a first truth that even deep doubt cannot shake.
  • Reason and belief Examine how Descartes argues for God's existence and connects those arguments with knowledge.
  • Why judgment goes wrong Explore his account of error, where the will reaches beyond what the mind understands.
  • Mind, body, and the world Consider shape, number, and sensation as Descartes asks what material things are.

Doubt everything that can be doubted

The first meditation opens with a confession. Descartes says that since childhood he has accepted many false opinions, and that everything built on them must be shaky. So he decides, once in his life, to tear it all down and begin again from the foundations. He does not need to prove each belief false. It is enough to find some reason for doubt.

What is Meditations on First Philosophy about?

It is about what we can know for certain. Descartes doubts every belief he can, finds certainty in his own thinking, argues that God exists, and then uses that to defend knowledge of the world and the difference between mind and body.

What is the evil demon in Descartes?

The evil demon is an imagined, all powerful deceiver who tries to mislead Descartes about everything. It is not a real belief. He uses it as a thought experiment to push doubt as far as it can go.

Why are the meditations called six metaphysical meditations?

The book has six parts, each presented as one day of private reflection. They are called metaphysical because they deal with the nature of the self, God, and reality, rather than with practical or scientific matters.
