About this book
On damaged pages, the Savior speaks, his apostles question him, and the meaning of the cross comes into view.
The Gospel of the Savior is an anonymous early Christian dialogue that places Jesus with his apostles in the days before his death. They answer, question and sometimes plead with him. According to the text, his coming suffering carries meaning for salvation, giving these exchanges a sense of urgency.
The work survives in Coptic, the language of Christian Egypt, on badly damaged leaves. Many lines are lost, so this is not a complete, continuous story. Yet its surviving passages bring together teaching, prayer and the disciples’ questions, offering a glimpse of how Jesus is remembered outside the New Testament.

In short
What happens to a soul when the body falls away? Three disciples, Matthew, Judas and Mary, put that question to their teacher, and his answers are not the ones most readers expect.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A broken dialogue from early Egyptian Christianity
The work is a dialogue, a form early Christian writers used to show a teacher at close quarters with his friends. A short opening speech sets the mood, and then the questions begin. Most of the text is single lines, a disciple asking and the Lord answering, so the reader moves quickly from one topic to the next.
The Coptic manuscript is damaged. Many lines are missing words, and some passages are only scattered phrases. Translators mark these gaps. Treat them as part of the object, as a worn coin is still a coin. Even in the torn places, the shape of a question and the rhythm of a reply can often be felt.

What is the Gospel of the Savior about?
It is a dialogue in which Matthew, Judas and Mary question the Savior about prayer, fear, the soul, the making of the world and the way to light, and he answers in short, striking sayings.
Who are the disciples who speak in the dialogue?
Three disciples take the main parts: Matthew, Judas and Mary. Matthew asks about sight and about the dead and living, Judas about the cosmos and garments, and Mary offers brief, perceptive sayings.
Why does the text have gaps and missing words?
It survives in a damaged Coptic manuscript, so some lines are partly lost. Translators mark the breaks, and the clear sayings around them still give a good sense of the teaching.
