About this book
How does a young church learn to pray, settle disputes, and face death before its traditions are firmly settled?
Apostolic Fathers gathers early Christian writings from the generation after the apostles. In letters, teaching, a sermon, and visions, these writers address communities learning how to live together. The First and Second Epistles of Clement, the seven letters of Ignatius, and the Epistle of Polycarp bring questions of order, belief, and courage close to everyday life.
The collection also includes the Didache, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Papias fragments, and the Shepherd of Hermas. The Didache offers practical teaching for church life; Hermas presents a world of visions. Together, these varied works reveal how early congregations pray, baptize, argue, and suffer while the New Testament is still being gathered.
What you’ll discover
- Faith in daily practice Explore the Didache’s plain instructions and discover the practical concerns of early church life.

- Memory and witness Encounter Polycarp, whom later Christians remember as a link to the apostles’ own generation.
- A world of visions Enter the Shepherd of Hermas and discover a different kind of early Christian writing.
Is it for you?
This is for readers curious about how Christians lived and thought just after the New Testament era, and for students of church history. If you want a single story or one argument from start to finish, a collection like this may feel scattered.

A modern name for a loose group
The name Apostolic Fathers is not ancient. Scholars in the seventeenth century began to use it for Christian writers who lived soon after the apostles, and some of whom were said to have known them. The label stuck, and the writings are now printed together as one collection. It is a scholar's shelf, not a list that early churches drew up themselves.
The collection is in Greek. It usually contains the First Letter of Clement and the Second Letter of Clement, seven letters of Ignatius of Antioch, the Letter of Polycarp to the Philippians, and the Martyrdom of Polycarp. It also holds the Didache, the Letter of Barnabas, the Shepherd of Hermas, and the Letter to Diognetus. Fragments of Papias and Quadratus are often added. Some editions leave out one or two of these.
