À propos de ce livre
What does the medieval world look like when a traveller maps it through Jewish communities, busy harbours and holy places?
Benjamin of Tudela leaves Navarre and travels through southern Europe, the Byzantine lands, Syria, Iraq and Egypt. In this short twelfth-century account, he records what he sees and hears. His route leads through trading towns and scattered Jewish communities, with distances marking the road from one city to the next.
Benjamin names rabbis, notes trades, counts Jewish residents and describes their treatment under different rulers. Alongside these brief records come sights, legends and tombs. From Greece and Constantinople to Baghdad and Alexandria, his observations trace a world connected by the movement of people, goods and news.

The journey starts among scholars of Spain and Provence
Benjamin leaves Tudela and goes to Saragossa, then down the Ebro to Tortosa and Tarragona. There he admires walls of huge ancient stones. Barcelona is a small, beautiful port where merchants arrive from Greece, Pisa, Genoa, Sicily, Alexandria and Palestine. The pattern of the book is already clear. He names the place, the distance, the trade and the Jews.
Narbonne, he says, is a city of learning from which the Torah goes out to every land. About three hundred Jews live there. At Lunel the congregation teaches, feeds, houses and clothes scholars who arrive from distant lands. At Posquières, Rabbi Abraham son of David pays the costs of poor students from his own wealth.

What is The Itinerary of Benjamin of Tudela about?
It is a Hebrew travel account of a twelfth-century Jewish traveller from Spain. Benjamin describes towns, markets, rulers and above all Jewish communities across Europe, the Middle East and Egypt, along with reports of lands farther east.
Who was Benjamin of Tudela and why did he travel?
Benjamin was a Jewish traveller from Tudela in Navarre. Scholars suggest he travelled to find safe Jewish communities, to look at trade and to visit the land of his ancestors, though he never states his purpose himself.
When did Benjamin of Tudela make his journey?
The introduction places his return in the early 1170s, and scholars date the travels to between about 1166 and 1171, based on rulers and events he mentions, such as Pope Alexander III and the last Fatimid caliph.
