About this book

What happens when loyalty demands one thing and revenge demands another?

In The Seventh Man, Max Brand brings you into a Western world of hard riding, quick tempers and moral tests. Wide open lands promise room to move, but small towns far from the law leave people facing hard choices. Horses and guns belong to a world where decisions cannot always wait.

At its heart, this adventure sets loyalty against revenge. Bonds to friends, family or a code can pull against the urge to answer harm with harm. Brand also explores redemption: the chance to set a life right after wrongdoing or loss. The question is not only what a man does, but whether he can find a way back.

What you’ll discover

  • A frontier of tests Enter a world where distance from the law makes personal choices carry greater weight.
  • Loyalty under pressure Consider what binds a person to others when revenge pulls in another direction.
  • The pull of revenge Explore the tension between answering harm and holding to a personal code.
  • A chance to return Find hope in the question of whether a damaged life can be set right.
  • Plain, fast storytelling Follow an old-fashioned Western that pairs adventure with questions about how to live.

Spring breaks a lonely miner's resolve

The book opens high in the mountains, where Vic Gregg has spent a whole winter alone. He has taken on fifteen hundred dollars of assessment work for the Duncans, drilling and blasting at fourteen mining claims and nearly finishing a fifteenth. He wants to marry Betty Neal, and marriage needs money, so he works until he drops into sleep each night. His only company is the clang of his hammer on iron and the ticking of a rusty alarm clock.
